Three years of blogging and going strong!

I had an OMG moment this morning when I realised that yesterday was the third anniversary of starting my blog! 398 posts and 205,256 views later, I am just amazed at how time flies.

I started Simply Bea because I wanted a way to record and share the styling I did - I'd been posting photos on Flickr for a while, and people were often contacting me to ask where they could find the items I was wearing. I had also decided to step into the world of Second Life fashion modelling and I could see that having a blog was a great way to promote and showcase myself as a model. A few hours spent messing around with Blogger, and Simply Bea was born!

What I hadn't realised then, was how this little blog could become a platform to share not only the clothes I liked to wear, but also to promote the causes that are important to me, and to share some of my reflections on issues that crop up from time to time in our community. It's enabled me to develop relationships with lots of designers too, it's been a springboard for all sorts of other work as a model, and I've become friends with many lovely people who met me first through this medium as well. It was SO worth the few hours it took to start.

I've seen a few posts from bloggers on Facebook recently, worrying that they're not getting enough views, and feeling disheartened. I can understand that. It does take a bit of work to style, shoot, edit and write blog posts, and we all want to be seen and appreciated for our efforts. When I started, I had a mere trickle of hits every day - but then looking at the stats and seeing visitors were coming from all over the world was really exciting. And it gave me determination to carry on. Three years down the line, I still check my stats, of course, but I'm less obsessed with the numbers now. I still blog mainly because I love to style and take photos, and knowing there are people out there who look at my work is the icing on the cake.

So, here's a heartfelt thank you for stopping by today and sharing my belated blog birthday with me! I do hope you like what you see, and will come back soon!

/me blows kisses!

Warm Clarity of  ~ghee~  has outdone herself with her new collection "Chinoiserie". Three gowns with Asian inspired patterns that shimmer on a fitted bodice with a plain full skirt, a sumptuous bow at the hip and extra flexi skirts for added fullness. This one is "Coquelicots" which is French for Poppies, stylised gold poppies on a deep red background.

We got together with model friend Falbala Fairey and styled the gowns with an Asian witchy theme for the vendor, and I decided I love it so much, I just had to put off the million and one other things I have to do today to take some pics of my own. I'm sure you'll love this one as much as I do.

Rose tinted glasses

Looking at the world through rose tinted glasses is often used as a criticism, rather than a compliment, with an implication of naivety, or a somewhat foolish failure to see things as they really are. On the other hand, is it really so bad to see the good in things? Maybe if we all focussed a little bit more on the good in people, and the world around us, it really would be a better place? I'm all for seeing the world in pretty shades of pink - I guess I'm a glass half-full kind of person. Which may be why I love these shades from Ladies Who Lunch at The Arcade, And when I saw the gorgeous colours of this new top, part of a complete outfit called Pepper from Sascha's Designs, I just had to style myself something gorgeous and girly in shades of pink and red...

SL Top Model The Final! Part 2 - Haute Couture

So, casual chic look was time for some Haute Couture! Here's what we were asked to do:

SL TOP MODEL COMES TO AN END ... Congratulations for making it this far!

I am requesting two different styles for the finale:

2) For your final walk down the runway I want you to inspire yourself on SPRING 2013 HAUTE COUTURE. Take a look at these.

Choose something that has wow potential, give it your twist, but look like you belong in your own collection for a spring 2013 show. Study the trends, the colors, the hair designs, the make up and come up with your own beautiful style! I don't want copies, I want to see an artist on  this runway!

Have fun,
Mr. Mills

I have to admit I was both excited and a bit scared about this one - I knew I had to really pull something great out of the bag. I spent a good while scrolling through slideshows, absorbing the different collections, and deciding which looks I really liked. The themes I particularly noticed for this Spring/Summer were black and white palettes, nature references - especially birds and flowers, sheer fabrics, and romanticism. I loved the Chanel collection, and decided to style a look you might see on the Chanel runway.

My starting point for the outfit was the Angel Gown from Ladies Who Lunch, a feather gown, with big skirts, a corset and shrug all made out of feathers. I decided to use the skirt and shrug - the corset looked bulky on me, and was too much. Only problem - the skirt, which comes in 3 parts, is huge and pouffy, and stops at calf length. I wanted a more slender silhouette, so I decide to lose the centre section, and pull the 2 sides in so they overlapped. Then I adjusted LOTS of prims, to make the skirt almost sweep the floor at the back and raise the front to above the knee. I'm sure you can imagine, this took a LONG time, but I think the end result is worth it!

Once I had the look together, I found myself having all sorts of crises of confidence, it was "too Chanel",  too understated, too simple....I added things, took them off the end, I decided to call on some trusted model friends for a second and third opinion, and after seeing a couple of alternatives, there was a clear consensus - this was the one! And, I must confess, I absolutely love it!

I was delighted to get into the final of SL Top Model. I didn't expect to win - all the finalists are awesome stylists and models, and for me, it was an open field. During the final, we had live critique from Frolic Mills, and his reaction to my 2 looks was awesome! It was only then I started to feel like maybe I really could win this thing. And I did! Such an incredible feeling - I've been walking on air the past 2 days.

I'd like to say a big thank you to Frolic Mills and BoSL for creating the contest, and making it both challenging and fun. Lexa Kronfield in particular was a joy as she held our hands all the way through. The other contestants were great to work with, and produced some awesome styling throughout the contest, and it's a pity there could only be one winner, because everyone was a winner to me. And of course the judges - some of SL's best designers, who had the hard task every week of deciding who would carry on in the contest. I won't forget those anxious moments waiting on the runway each week hoping to get chosen to go through to the next round! And a big thank you to my friends and everybody who has supported me through the contest - you have no idea how much that means to me. Thank you.

city girl goes to the countryside

There's a great episode of Sex and the City where Aiden takes Carrie to his shack in the country...and like all city girls, she has no idea what to wear, and is freaked by all the mud and creepy crawlies and things that go bump in the night. As a Londoner, I've always been a bit like that myself - I'm much more scared driving round winding country lanes than I ever am negotiating Marble Arch, and I've always been more worried about axe-weilding maniacs lurking in the hedgerows than serial killers frequenting the cobbled streets of Whitechapel.

When I tried on this cute gingham top from Orsini Red, it just seemed right to take it to the countryside. It cried out for some rockabilly styling, and when I tried it with the fab new hair from LeLutka, everything was saying Marilyn in The Misfits. So I took myself off to Roche, one of my all time favorite sims. And yes, I know those spiky heels would be a nightmare on that grass... but I am a city girl, and you have to admit they look hot!

Golden girl

Well, I finally made it as an SL celebrity! My shape has been copied and put up for sale on the SL Marketplace. I'm taking a philosophical stance on this, as copybotting models seems to be a bit of a trend right now, and as many have said, it's only a few pixels. The worst thing about it is, the copy of my shape is so CHEAP! But, if you really want to walk round SL in an avatar that looks like mine, save yourself a few lindens - IM me inworld and you can have one for free!

I adore this dress from Remy, it called out to me from across the store, and I knew I had to have it! I felt like doing some dramatic styling, and finally got to use this sooooo tall beehive hair from BooN that I've had my eye on for a while...and the striking new makeup from blackLiquid, Forrest, that combines lashes that are tiny silhouetted trees and heavy black eyeliner. I'll be wearing this outfit at some clubs and parties over the next month for sure! Scroll down for the style notes.

Culture Shock

I braved the lag and made it into Culture Shock, one of the 3 big charity shopping events starting this weekend. Organised by Chic Management, Culture Shock brings together 80+ designers who have produced exclusive items for sale in aid of Medecins Sans Frontieres, the international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural or man-made disasters.

Like any big event in Second Life, you will have to be ready to face some lag when you attend - so strip off those primmy attachments and get your scripts down to the bare minimum - but if you can cope with waddling around in a bikini (and let's face it, most people won't be able to see you anyway!) it's well worth it, with some great stuff available from familiar names, and some new (to me at least) designers to discover.

Style notes:

Knittted vest: Ladies Who Lunch - Muertos Layering Vest/pale (mesh)
